It doesn’t matter whether we are talking about business, government or your neighborhood home owner’s association there has to be somebody in charge; a person who has a vision for the future and an idea of how to reach that vision. This person has to be a leader. If a person is a strong leader it is easy for them to get others to follow but if they lack leadership skills people are hesitant to follow. Looking at current events we can see many examples of both strong and weak leaders in business and government. Rather than evoke the wrath of myopic individuals who see their favorite politician as doing no wrong I will stay away from government in citing examples. However, politicians it is time to lead, follow or get out of the way!
With fall quickly approaching the ducks and geese summering in northern Canada will soon be making their southern migration to warmer climates. In the early mornings and late afternoons if you look up into the sky you can see the familiar “V” shape of a flock of ducks or geese navigating their way south. Occasionally, you see where a bird will break away from the flock and a few birds will follow but in short order the lead bird will move the flock in the direction of the rogue birds, drawing them back into the “V” and then re-set their path back in a southern direction. While I’m using birds as an example the same thing happens with people. Someone doesn’t believe what the leader is saying and decides to venture off on their own taking a few others with them and if the leader is strong they are able to draw these individuals back into the group but if the leader is weak their group will become more and more splintered as others become disenchanted and want you to lead, follow or get out of the way!
I was listening to the radio yesterday and heard a quote from Will Rogers who stated, “You may be on the right track but you’ll get run over if you just sit there”. Rogers was certainly witty and had a way of expressing the weaknesses of our leaders. In essence wasn’t he telling us as leaders to lead, follow or get out of the way? The success of business, government or your neighborhood home owner’s association depends upon a strong leader. If your organization is struggling, you need to ask yourself, “Are you leading”? If not, you know the alternatives.
