The city is experiencing a slight annual population decline of -0.05%, with a decrease of -0.19% since the 2020 census, according to NCHStats. The Denver metro area, which includes surrounding counties, is expected to reach approximately 2,995,000.
The Denver metro, which covers six counties around the capital city, grew by 2.8 percent from 2020 to 2024, adding about 82,000 residents, according to recent U.S. Census estimates.
The increase bucks a national trend that saw many major U.S. cities, like New York and Los Angeles, lose residents following the pandemic.

Alpine Outlets Published June 24, 2024 an article states, “Denver’s early years were not without their challenges. The gold rush eventually fizzled out, leaving the city in an economic slump. Great fires ravaged the city in 1863 and 1874, destroying much of the early infrastructure.
However, Denver proved to be a resilient city. The discovery of silver in nearby Leadville in the 1870s brought a renewed economic boom. Denver became a major transportation hub, with railroads connecting it to mining centers and Eastern cities.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw Denver continue to grow and develop. The city attracted new residents from across the country, seeking a better life in the beautiful Rocky Mountain setting. New industries emerged, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and brewing. Denver became a cultural center, with the construction of theaters, museums, and libraries.”
