What has happen to the concept of people being accountable for their actions? I don’t know, but it just seems to me that people today feel they can make poor choices and then expect others to bail them out. We have become a society of enablers. The examples are so numerous that I’m not even sure where to begin. Perhaps a good place to start is with the kids in this country who ditch classes and the statistics indicating 27.6% of all high school students don’t graduate. When kids don’t graduate from high school and find themselves working low paying jobs they then look to the government for entitlements to help them with their living needs. Excuse me … they need to grow up and be accountable for their actions!
The problem doesn’t end with kids however. As a business owner of a Denver real estate firm I’ve experienced the employee who doesn’t report to work when scheduled and always seems to find some way to undermine the business. Regardless of the corrective measures I take to help this employee become more responsible there is a point where it is necessary to terminate the employer/employee relationship. Okay, they were fired. The employee immediately drives to the unemployment office and applies for government assistance. Excuse me … they need to grow up and be accountable for their actions!
It’s not only employees who feel they are owed a living. There are also vendors who believe they should be paid for their work regardless of how poor the quality or in spite of what damage they do to the property while performing their work. When an owner questions the vendor’s performance and requests billing modifications the vendor threatens to file a lien on the owner’s property. Again, there is another governmental process to enable the underperformer. Excuse me… they need to grow up and be accountable for their actions.
I believe it is necessary to hold our kids responsible for their actions so that they don’t grow into adults who fail to take responsibility for their actions. I also believe it is time for the government to stop enabling adults and make them take responsibility for their actions. What do you believe?
